Lombardy is the primary Italian region in the field of Life Sciences and Chemical Sector. Today, the region ranks in the top position in European region for employment and locations in the chemical sector. It employs 9,200 pharmaceutical employees and operates 33 Research and Development centers and 90 Red Biotech companies.

According to data on biotechnology sector, the Italian biotech total turnover accounts for € 9bn, showing an increase over the last years, whilst R&D investments only in Lombardy have grown to € 1,8ml. The regional Government has allocated more than € 500ml in the sector.
The biotechnology sector is divided into three primary groups: Red (biomedical field), White (industrial development) and Green (agriculture field). In Italy, Red Biotech is the predominant industry, with 261 active companies of which the most based in Lombardy.
Lombardy hosts 30% of Italian biotech companies. Biotechnology is a strategic sector for the competitive edge of Lombardy.
The region is the top absorber in Italy in terms of Research and Development, which includes 46% of employees and 30% of investments.
